Body mass index is calculated from your weight and height, using a simple, universal formula.
BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height² (m)
Stand straight, barefoot, back against the wall, and note your height in metres (e.g. 1.72 m).
Weigh yourself preferably in the morning, on an empty stomach, on a reliable scale, and note your weight in kilograms.
Divide your weight by your height squared. Example: 68 ÷ (1.72 × 1.72) ≈ 23 — a normal BMI.

BMI is an indicator that relates your weight to your height to estimate your body corpulence. It is calculated by dividing weight (in kg) by height squared (in m). It is the reference tool used by the WHO to position a weight against a standard.
A BMI between 18.5 and 25 is considered normal for an adult. Below that is thinness; above 25 is overweight, and above 30 is obesity. The ideal BMI is a range, not a single number.
Divide your weight in kilos by your height in metres squared. For example, for 68 kg and 1.72 m: 68 ÷ (1.72 × 1.72) ≈ 23. Our calculator does this automatically and interprets the result for you.
No. BMI doesn't distinguish fat mass from muscle mass and ignores body shape. It is not suitable for children, pregnant women, the elderly or very muscular athletes. It's a reference point, not a diagnosis.
The BMI formula and thresholds are identical for adult men and women. However, at the same BMI, body composition (body fat percentage) often differs between the sexes, which BMI does not measure.
